Multiculturalism in Smart Devices – Investigating Race/Ethnicity Users Perceptions of Smart Devices Security and Privacy Concerns

Study Description
We are conducting a survey and interviews to understand and explore the perceptions of different race/ethnicity groups to see how they view, feel, and handle privacy concerns with regards to the smart device(s) they currently own. We want to gain a better understanding of how each race/ethnicity groups perceives their smart device(s) and if they encounter any situation where their privacy has been violated.
Eligibility
We are looking for participants from:
- All types of races/ethnicities
- Ages 18+
- Owns or plans to own smart device(s)

About the Survey / Interview:
The survey will consist of seven sections and will take approximately 20 minutes of your time to complete. Your responses will be confidential and anonymous. We will only collect your email address to send you your compensation reward. We do not collect any other Personal Identifiable Information (PII) such as street address, phone number, social security number, etc. You will be compensated with a $10 gift card for your time and effort.
Interviews will consist of five sections and will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes or as long as you would like to talk about your experiences. Interviews will be conducted in-person or on Zoom or any platform you feel comfortable using. No camera is required when using video conference platforms. With your permission, the interview will be audio-recorded. You can stop the interview at any time, and you do not have to answer a particular question if you don’t want to. You will get compensated extra for your time and effort in the interview.
Data Handling:
Our research team will have access to all collected data, which will be encrypted and securely stored without any personally identifiable information. If providing e-mail addresses, your anonymity will be safeguarded.
For interviews, audio-recording will be use to create transcriptions to analyze the data thoroughly after the interview. The way we will manage your data and transcripts is as follows:
- the recording of the interview will be deleted a few days after the interview once the transcripts have been written.
- Your name and other personally identifying information will not be gathered as part of the study.
- Since participant names will not be kept on file, results will be reported using codes like P001, P002, etc.
- The Institutional Review Board (IRB) authorized the interview and data management process.
